If you're a fan of Scandinavian design, like us, then you've probably seen the word "hygge" by now. The Danish term, pronounced "hoo-guh", has no direct translation and may vary slightly depending on who you ask. It refers to a way of life, a feeling, a mentality; though, you'd be hard-pressed to find a translation that doesn't include the word "cozy." Hygge is all about savoring the present moment and being in an atmosphere where you can enjoy feelings of warmth, peace, contentment and togetherness.
Scandinavian home styles popping up all over Pinterest encompass the hygge lifestyle: neutral, clean, minimal, earthy, and warm. Hygge homes are best known for blending natural elements like wood, leather and stone with soft textiles like chunky knits, velvet, and fur. And there is never any shortage of light, either natural or candlelit. The different textures, textiles and lighting should create an overall feeling of coziness. Thus, creating the perfect setting for sharing wine and simple meals with friends and family; the most essential part of hygge.
The best way to bring this style to life is to only bring in items that are sentimental and with intent, rather than buying things just for the sake of buying them (or because the sale was too good to resist). Hygge style keeps clutter to a minimum, giving you more space for what's truly important. For this reason, we love showcasing family heirlooms, shopping vintage and supporting our local artisans.
Besides throwing an Arne Jacobsen chair into the mix, here are some of our favorite accessories to help bring the magic of hygge into your own home:
